MEDITATION

Why Meditate?

This is taming a deep-seated tendency we have to try to get away from what we are doing. It is not taming in the sense of trying to subdue something wild that needs to be tamed. It is taming as harmony and relaxation. Mindfulness opens our mind to the present. We are learning to be in the present moment, so our mind becomes more relaxed, and we are relaxed with our mind.

When we do this, meditation begins to seep into our action. An analogy is that it's like walking in a mist. You don't realize you are getting wet, and then you find you're soaked. In the process of letting go of our thoughts, we see that the world exists on its own without our commentary. This is an important discovery. This is a further stage of meditation called awareness. We begin to go further in the present moment.

Awareness is being able to perceive and examine, to relax and learn from the situation in front of us. It is a further stage of meditation, so we can engage more, and enjoy the world. Awareness is based on having a total experience. The more we perceive and examine how our mind works, the more we are able to bring body, speech and mind together as one unit to encounter and learn from the world. This is a natural expansion of mindfulness. So, awareness is also called mindfulness-awareness. And sometimes it is called insight, because we are able to see what is happening in the environment we are in. This is because we are no longer caught up in ourselves. We are able to able to examine and perceive clearly. We notice things beyond ourselves. And our perceptions of the world become richer.

Awareness is the fruition of mindfulness.

It is relaxing and learning how to let go of our fixed ideas, relaxing into the environment. With awareness, we begin to see the causes of things, why someone is angry, what is happening with others in the room. Usually when we go into a space we are not aware of who is there, what colors are there, the details, the sounds, because we are so concerned with our agenda and what others think of us.

But when we are able to relax our struggle, we are able to see with a fresh eye what is in the room around us. We become more intelligent, because there is no agenda in our mind. Our mind is relaxed, more like a mirror, reflecting whatever is happening without bias.
