Chariot of Mahamudra
with Richard John
November 30 / 7:00 PM - December 2 / 5:00 PM
The Akron-Canton Shambhala Center is very happy to welcome Acharya Richard John back for his third visit to our Center .
The Mahamudra ("The Great Seal") teachings are among the most profound teachings and practices of vajrayana buddhism. Mahamudra is also extremely simple and direct, with meditation practices that work with the principle of personal contact with and communication with reality, using both symbolic and formless meditation techniques.
The Mahamudra lineage of Tibet and India includes the great Kagyu masters Tilopa, Naropa, Marpa, and Milarepa, the Karmapa and Trungpa lineages, and is an integral part of the Shambhala Lineage. The Shingon lineage of Japan is also a mahamudra lineage.
The Friday evening talk, an "Overview of Mahamudra," is part of the program.
Saturday will be devoted to the practice of mahamudra shamatha (mindfulness meditation), based on the text by the 17th century master Pema Karpo.
On Sunday, the practice of vipashyana (insight meditation) investigation will be introduced, based upon Pointing Out the Dharmakaya by the 9th century Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje.
This program works with advanced meditation experiences, and is for people who have already received meditation instruction and have some practice experience.
Weekend participants should have completed Shambhala Training Level One, and/or taken courses from the Way of Shambhala (the In Everyday Life classes), or Shambhala School of Buddhist Studies curriculum (Karma and the Nidanas, Lojong). Exceptions will be considered upon request.
For questions about eligibility, please contact Richard Weiner, Director of Practice and Education for the Akron-Canton Shambhala Center, at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Participants should commit to attending the entire program; there will be no partial attendance.
We regret that we are not able to offer any discounts for Acharya John's programs; however, we will accept payment arrangements if made ahead of time.
A WHITE TARA EMPOWERMENT will be held after the seminar concludes on Sunday, at approx. 6:30 PM. This is a practice written by Sakyong Mipham, Rinpoche. Prerequisite: Refuge Vows. For a description, and to register, please go here.
