Diamond Highway: Reading and Book Signing with Tony Cape
August 27 / 7:00 PM - August 27 / 9:00 PM
The author will read from his new memoir about his experience of the community surrounding Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche in the last decade of the Tibetan Buddhist teacher's life. Tony's first-hand experience as personal attendant to Rinpoche makes this window into the early days of the Shambhala community a unique event. Copies of the memoir will be available for purchase.
“Diamond Highway” is a candid account of the author's ten years of household service to the Tibetan meditation master Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. The founder of Shambhala International, Rinpoche was among the most influential and controversial Tibetan Buddhist lamas to live and teach in the West. Tony Cape became his devoted student in the mid-70s and soon after one of his kusung or personal attendants. Diamond Highway is a loving tribute that recounts the story of Trungpa’s community from this privileged viewpoint, without flinching from the controversial aspects of those early days. It follows the evolution of Trungpa’s American sangha by focusing on the flagship institutions and programs that he initiated (including Naropa Institute and the annual military encampment) and the unique qualities of the Kalapa Court, as Trungpa Rinpoche’s household was known. The book is also a candid memoir of the author’s experience of major depression as an accompaniment to the spiritual path.
