Shambhala Meditation Weekthun at Juniper Hill

with Tom Bell
May 2 / 6:00 PM - May 10 / 10:00 AM

This group meditation retreat is specially authorized by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche as part of a pilot series of retreats designed to introduce meditation practitioners to the meaning and experience of “Shambhala Meditation.” Sakyong Mipham has been carefully introducing this new approach to meditation to the Shambhala community.

This retreat is a wonderful opportunity to dedicate one week of meditation practice to begin to learn this very beneficial approach to meditation. Mindfulness and awareness meditation will be practiced within an atmosphere infused with the qualities of Shambhala Meditation.

Each day consists of periods of sitting and walking meditation, body-mind exercises, study and contemplation, chanting, and a short work session. Meals are taken in silence in the shrine room. Each participant receives individual meditation instruction during the retreat. Talks and group guidance are offered regularly. The study component covers basic teachings on calm abiding and insight meditation as well as the new teachings of Shambhala Meditation. All this study and discussion is done within the context of the Shambhala Buddhist view of warriorship and enlightened society.

Thomas Bell first received teachings from the Vidyadhara, the Venerable Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche in December of 1972, and received individual meditation instruction from Trungpa Rinpoche in the fall of 1973, and attended the Vajradathu Seminary in 1976. Mr. Bell directed and staffed numerous dathuns over the following years, and in 2000, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche appointed Mr. Bell to serve as the Director of Karme Chöling. During his years as Director of KCL he was involved with various Dathüns, including serving as Director of the Winter Dathün in 2002. Since returning to Nova Scotia in December of 2003 Mr. Bell has been an active teacher and student in Shambhala and has continued to apply these teachings to his work and family life, which now includes seven grandchildren, ages 1 to 17.
