Garden Apprenticeship Program
with Jan Enthoven
April 18 / 12:00 AM - October 16 / 12:00 AM
Entering its second year, the Garden Apprenticeship Program at Karmê Chöling is a unique 6-month residential program in which participants gain both theoretical and practical hands-on training in organic gardening principles while participating in mindfulness-awareness based meditation practices. Selected participants will fully integrate into the retreat center life, sharing their meals and home with a community of Shambhala practitioners dedicated to creating a culture of kindness.
Produce and herbs from the garden supply the Karmê Chöling kitchen for approximately six months of the year and also serve local individuals and families through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares. Flowers from the Karmê Chöling garden are used in the shrine rooms and halls of the retreat center to create uplifted environments.
Apprentices work in the garden, as well as participate in the full curriculum of the garden internship. Over the course of the season, the goal is for the apprentice to take increasing ownership of the production garden, including managing propagation schedules, irrigation rotations, and harvest days preparing the apprentice to manage their own organic growing system. Periodic field trips to other local growers will be offered as well as seminars on topics such as food preservation, herbal medicine, and wild foods. Connecting the ecology of the garden with that of the forest, which constitutes the bulk of the land at Karmê Chöling, will be an aspect of the apprenticeship, including nature walks and some possible foraging.
Apprentices will participate in daily group meditation practices. Each apprentice will also receive individual meditation instruction and have a personal meditation instructor to help guide them in their practice. Practicums covering aspects of Shambhala culture, such as Ikebana, the art of Japanese flower arranging, will be offered. The apprenticeship will conclude with the option for each apprentice to participate in the first two weeks of the 2014 fall dathun mediation intensive at Karmê Chöling.
Limited space is available. Application deadline February 15th, 2014.
