The Emerging Impulse: Life and Writing as Art
with Aidan Thompson
May 3 / 9:30 AM - May 3 / 5:00 PM
In this movement and writing workshop we will explore mindfulness—a moment to moment practice that encouragescuriosity, discovery, and creativity, rather than judgment and discursive thinking. Through movement exercises we will first cultivate a direct, fresh experience of our environment by paying attention to and following sensations in the body. We will then apply this embodied/mind awareness to writing. Using writers such as Allen Ginsberg, Gertrude Stein, and Hannah Weiner we will experience what it means to write from the physical sensations of sound, rhythm, and visual awareness. In essence, we will give our conceptual minds a break and allow sensations—that demand attentiveness to the moment—to lead the way; and in the process, foster our capacity for an integrated mind/body as well as develop confidence in our natural, innate creativity.
No previous creative writing or meditation experience is necessary. Aidan is the author of two books of poetry, Particle and Probability (Potes and Poets Press) and So Earnest to Have a Green Point (Palimpsest Press). She has trained and performed with improvisational artist such as Danny Lepkoff in NYC and Ruth Zaporha in the Bay Area. She has been studying Buddhism for fifteen years; the last five years have been focused on Shambhala.
