How can I help? The Basic Goodness of Society

This course asks the question, "How can I help?" and explores our aspiration to help our world, how we relate with others,  and how real social transformation could occur.  We will investigate the question "Is society something that is ultimately confused, or is there goodness in human society?"

The course explores the Shambhala teachings on society and what enlightened society may be. We will also look at the traditional wisdom teachings on transforming four key aspects of society: family life (household), work life, entertainment / leisure, and economy.

Students will receive instruction in the traditional Mahayana practice of "sending and receiving" (tonglen).  


Prerequisite:  It is highly recommended to have taken Level 1, Meditation in Everyday Life or an Intro to Meditation course.   




About the Basic Goodness Series:




The Basic Goodness Series introduces the view of Shambhala in an experiential way by examining our personal experience, our experience with others, and our relationship with the reality of life itself.


The key difference between the Everyday Life courses and the Basic Goodness courses is that the Everyday Life courses emphasize personal transformation in daily life, whereas the Basic Goodness courses emphasize the experiential study of view and meaning.


While you may start with this series, we strongly recommend that you receive basic meditation instruction in advance (at a Shambhala open house or Beginning to Meditate class, for instance). We also suggest that you take the Meditation in Everyday Life course first.


"How Can I Help? The Basic Goodness of Society"" is the second of three courses in the Basic Goodness series. The first course is "Who Am I? The Basic Goodness of Being Human" and the third course is entitled "What is Real? The Basic Goodness of Reality." These three courses can be taken in any order.   We will be offering the other courses in the fall/winter of 2014.
