An Introduction on Alexander Technique and Meditation

Through meditative practices and the Alexander Technique we can awaken to Shinjin, the essential unity of body and mind and experience “effortless effort” in everyday activity.  It is simply our wrong thinking and need to effort that gets in the way and leads to excessive tension and distortion in our physical system.

Sumi Komo has been teaching (since 1981) and training teachers of the Alexander Technique (since 1990). Her work has focused on people of all ages and from all walks of life. She is an ordained Zen Buddhist priestess in the lineage of Maezumi Roshi. She has been teaching Tai Chi Chuan, Qi Gong and Yoga for almost 3 decades. She is a senior member of the Integral Yoga (R) Teacher's Association. She has an M.A. in Dance, Psychology and Sports Medicine and continues to teach and develop workshops on Yoga and the Alexander Technique and on Yoga Dance. Her focus is on awareness of the harmonious and graceful weaving of these various practices through the heart of movement. She originally trained and danced professionally in New York City with Merce Cunningham, Carolyn Brown and others in the Cunningham lineage.  An accident led her to explore movement/dance from an inner awareness sensation and perception through subtle unraveling’s of the body being. She integrates dance with Yoga, T'ai Chi Chuan, Alexander Technique and Zen meditation training. She has developed a movement form that calls forth the core of stillness into movement, meditation, and light in motion.
