Queer Dharma: The Treatise on Enlightened Society

August 3 / 2:00 PM - August 3 / 4:00 PM

You are invited to receive transmission of the Treatise on Enlightened Society, read and facilitated by Queer Dharma coordinator Jason Bray.

Written by Sakyong Mipham while on his year‐long retreat in 2010, the Treatise on Enlightened Society clarifies the meaning of enlightened society and its relevance in the modern world. The Sakyong feels that the nature of the Treatise on Enlightened Society calls for a social process of transmission in which anyone can be empowered to receive and give the reading transmission to each other.

What we are calling the “cascading lung” is likely the first ever “open‐source” lung in our community in which all people are invited and empowered to not only receive, but also give, the reading transmission. The Sakyong is inspired to see the text spread according to lines of genuine inspiration and find its way into the hearts of any human beings who are inspired by a vision for enlightened society.

Lung is a Tibetan term meaning “wind, breath, or energy” and it is used to refer to the process of receiving a reading transmission. A reading transmission is the traditional method by which a text is passed from one human being to another. When a master composes a text, disciples may request to receive a lung in order to gain permission to study and practice this new composition. The master will read this text to disciples; in turn these disciples may be empowered to offer reading transmissions to others. Many ancient texts have been kept “alive” in this way. When we a receive a text through a reading transmission there is a sense of being part of the living stream of breath and energy that originated with the author of the text. Receiving a text in this way is quite different from simply purchasing or downloading information—it includes a sense of empowerment and blessing that flows through a living, human lineage.

Queer Dharma is a group for LGBTQ practitioners to study and practice meditation and Dharma and to discuss personal experiences.  The group serves to send a message to new-comers that they are welcome in our tradition and to explore (perhaps in ways that may be unintentionally overlooked or excluded in our regular programming) how we as gays, lesbians, bisexuals, trans and gender queer individuals can incorporate the teachings in our everyday lives and in our various social circles.

We're scheduled to meet every first Sunday of the month 2-4pm.  Meditation instruction is available to you.  It’s a free event with suggested donation of any dollar amount.  Continue to socialize over dinner and drinks at Crush afterward.  All are warmly welcome regardless of experience, spiritual tradition, age, gender or sexual identity.  See you there!
