Refuge Vow Prep Classes
with Jeffrey Stevens
September 9 / 7:00 PM - September 23 / 9:00 PM
These 3-class course is open to ALL who are interested in learning about the Buddhist view of life.
This course is highly recommended if you are planning to take the Refuge Vow at Shambhala Mountain Center (SMC) with Acharya Allyn Lyon on October 5-6, 2013. Please sign up for the vows at SMC HERE.
The formal decision to become a Buddhist is marked by the refuge ceremony, in which you take refuge in what are known as the three jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. The Refuge Vow entails a public pronouncement of committing to turn away from confused mind, samsara, and commit to following the Buddha as example, the Dharma as the teaching that awakens us from samsara, and standing alongside the Sangha or community of fellow practitioners who are doing the same. It is traditionally understood as proclaiming that you are a Buddhist.
After taking this vow, you will be given a name to mark the turning point you are taking by the preceptor.
The Refuge Vow Sourcebook is recommended for this class. SMCD made a "group order" for the recommended Refuge Vow Sourcebook on August 27th and we do not plan to make another group order at this time; however, if you need the Sourcebook, please register but do not proceed to PayPal. In your pre-registration e-mail, you also will receive the link to order your personal copy of the Sourcebook if you wish.
