Who am I? The Basic Goodness of Being Human
This course is the first in a series of three classes known as the Basic Goodness Series which are part of the Shambhala Way of Shambhala program. This class focuses on the sense of self. It includes teachings on basic goodness, selflessness, the arising of ego and the 5 skandhas, cocoon, buddha nature, and the confidence of warriorship. We will practice contemplative investigations of the self based upon the 4 Foundations of Mindfulness. The second and third classes will be offered between February and May of 2014. They are:
How can I help? The Basic Goodness of Society
The second course focuses on relationship and society. It is an exploration of the nature of society and what it might mean to help our world. Teachings on bodhichitta, communication, virtue, and how society arises as an expression of interconnectedness. We will practice "sending and taking" (tonglen) as a main practice and
What is Real? The Basic Goodness of Reality
The third course focuses on a study of the phenomenal world. It emphasizes some of the core Buddhist teachings, such as impermanence, the process of perception, the "mind," and emptiness. It is oriented towards the experience of sacred world, the magic and wonder of the natural elements. There is a definite ecological element to the class.
In general, the Basic Goodness Series is an introduction to the view of Shambhala, taught in an experiential way. The key difference between the Everyday Life classes (CIEL etc), and the Basic Goodness classes is that the Everyday Life Courses emphasize personal transformation in everyday life while the Basic Goodness Courses emphasize view and meaning. However, the Basic Goodness Courses are also very experiential and personal, and not just intellectual study.
