Today, many of us find ourselves feeling negative about our lives, our selves. Our habit is to second-guess ourselves, always looking from the outside in and seeing what we don’t like about ourselves. With that as our starting point, the eyes with which we gaze around us have difficulty appreciating what we see.
Meditation allows us to relax into our inherently good and wise nature, which is trustworthy. When we are not on the defensive we can appreciate the world around us, and tune into the good hearts of others, inviting them to relax as well.
Pamela Bothwell is a senior student of the Vidyadhara Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. Mrs. Bothwell first met the Vidyadhara in 1973, and has been studying and practicing the Shambhala Buddhist teachings ever since. A retired attorney and mother of three young adults, Mrs. Bothwell lives in Los Angeles where she has served as the Shambhala Center Director. She currently serves as a Secretary to the Sakyong.
