The Rigden is a representation of our basic enlightened nature and embodies the principle of unconditional bravery. Historically, Rigdens were enlightened rulers - those who could rule their world based on their unwavering experience of basic goodness.
Rigden: Unconditional Confidence is not just another weekend program. This program is led by an Acharya in the Shambhala tradition and introduces further principles of warriorship. This is also the point on the path when one takes the Shambhala Vow, which is offered at the conclusion of the weekend.
Taking the Shambhala Vow is a powerful moment in transforming the life of any individual. Upon receiving this warrior vow, you receive a Shambhala name and are considered a citizen of Shambhala. As a warrior, you commit to perpetually foster your basic goodness. In addition, you do not disparage other traditions, you never lose inspiration for humanity, and you engender love for all beings and loyalty to your fellow warriors who are making the same commitment. In this way, this weekend marks the beginning of a lifelong journey and is a gateway to the Kingdom of Shambhala.
It is certainly fine to attend the weekend and not take the vow. If you have a meditation instructor, this would be a good time to meet with them and discuss questions or feelings that may naturally arise.
With the great problems now facing human society, the Rigden weekend emphasizes connecting with one's innate goodness to manifest genuine confidence and bravery when engaging in the challenges in one's life and the world.
Generosity is the virtue that produces peace.
~Sutra of the Recollection of the Noble Three Jewels
At the Bellingham Shambhala Centre we are committed to making our offerings accessible to everyone regardless of financial concerns. If the suggested price for any program or event is an obstacle, we welcome participants to contribute what they can afford. We appreciate any contribution.
At the same time, we need revenue to stay open, grow, and expand our offerings to the world at large. Accordingly, we encourage everyone to be as generous as possible in supporting the centre.
