REFUGE & BODHISATTVA VOW CEREMONIES

June 2 / 7:00 PM - June 2 / 9:00 PM

Refuge Vow  7:00 PM    Open to the Public

Bodhisattva Vow    1:30 PM
Open to those who have already taken the Bodhisattva Vow

The Refuge Vow is the traditional step of formally becoming a Buddhist by taking "refuge" in the Three Jewels:  the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha.

The Bodhisattva Vow is a further extension of one's personal commitment to be of ongoing benefit to others.  Having glimpsed basic goodness, the basic sanity and worthiness with which we are born we aspire to manifest this fully in our lives and in society at large.   One customarily takes the vow at least six months after having taken the refuge ceremony.

The preceptor for the vow ceremonies will be Acharya Allyn Lyon.

It is strongly recommended that you  plan to attend a Review of the Three Jewels Class that Acharya Lyon taught here in 2009 if you are planning to take the Refuge Vow.

Three Jewels Review:  Saturday May 11 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
We will listen to audio recordings of the Acharya's talks, look more closely at the Refuge Vow itself and consider how we integrate the teachings of the Buddha into our life in a meaningful way.  The gathering is open to anyone wishing to know more about what it means to be a Buddhist.

Refugees are asked to offer a heart gift of $25 to the preceptor for performing the ceremony

Gathering for Aspiring Bodhisattvas:  Sunday May 19 from 1:30 to 4:30 PM.   This is Required preparation.  The purpose is to discuss your aspiration and to rehearse for the ceremony.

For those who are planning to take the Bodhisattva Vow, please be aware that this vow ceremony includes offering a gift to the preceptor, representing your intention to let go of fixation and to offer yourself to others.  Traditionally one offers something which has both some personal and intrinsic value and is difficult to part with.  This gift could be monetary but this is not at all necessary.

People who are considering taking either vow must meet with your Meditation Instructor as part of the application process and request your meditation instructor email a letter of recommendation to the Program Coordinator by May 15.

Interviews with Acharya Lyon to enable her to select your Refuge or Bodhisattva name will be scheduled for Sunday May 26.

Please contact the program coordinator with any questions and to schedule your interview with Acharya Lyon.

Use the "Comments" field on the Registration Page to indicate which vow you will take.
