The afternoon will include an outdoor run. Please bring appropriate attire.
Distance running or walking is often the exercise of choice for reducing stress, bringing us greater perspective and connecting us directly to the wisdom of the body. The practices of meditation offers similar benefits, helping us cultivate stillness and nonjudgmental awareness of the mind’s activities. Join us for an afternoon of exploration as we discover a deeper experience of peace through meditation and running in New York. The program will include meditation instruction and practice, group discussion, and a contemplative group run.
This workshop is designed for runners and walkers of all levels.
Erich Strom has been a member of the Shambhala community since 2005. He is a meditation instructor, co-resident director of the center's Way of Shambhala curriculum, and an avid distance runner.
Reviews for the book Running with the Mind of Meditation, by Sakyong Mipham:
There is much wisdom to be found in this brilliant yet simple book. The lessons offered by Sakyong Mipham are like spiritual vitamins that will nourish the runner's soul.
–Jerry Lynch, Ph.D, author with Al Huang of Spirit of the Dancing Warrior and the best-seller, Thinking Body, Dancing Mind
Running With the Mind of Meditation is a delightful and welcome addition to contemplative literature. We often forget that movement is a natural complement to meditative practice, and helps us avoid what has been called the 'stone Buddha' syndrome. This book is a profound guide to the integration of mind and body.
