The Alexander Technique is a method of neuromuscular movement reeducation that retrains our body and restores grace, power, balance, ease, and efficiency. The technique is a great aid to meditators. It is wonderful for relieving neck and back pain, and for easing the aches and pains of sitting practice. We will address balance in sitting and standing, and take that balance into motion.
We are in constant relationship to gravity, and our natural response is to open, both up and out. However, most of us have spent years unintentionally interfering with that response. This creates unnecessary tension that can lead to physical discomfort. Janet uses keen perception and subtle technique to facilitate a simple relearning of the natural state for the human body: to relax, rest, and move.
As in sitting meditation, with the Alexander Technique we learn to get out of our own way by "doing nothing." Ironically, we need to relearn how to "do nothing."
Janet Lott has been a student of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche for over 30 years. She served on the Movement Studies faculty of Naropa University (then Institute) for eleven years. After a career in contemporary dance she qualified as a Teacher of the Alexander Technique of movement retraining in 2001. She studied with Frank Ottiwell and Robert Britton. Janet has taught the Alexander Technique at Dechen Chöling, the Shambhala land center in France, and privately in the US.
