Wednesday Dharma Night February Speakers

A great introduction to the Shambhala Buddhist teachings, and an opportunity to connect with other meditation practitioners in a relaxed, comfortable environment. Featuring meditation practice, meditation instruction, a talk by one of our senior teachers and discussion. We also offer an assortment of delicious snacks and tea before each session.

The current series of dharma talks focuses on the concept of Warriorship, or human bravery, and the Shambhala path of bringing the sanity and peace we encounter on the meditation cushion out into our everyday lives.

February 6, Interdependence Project
With Ethan Nichtern

The Founder of The Interdependence Project, shares his vision of creating an Enlightened Society by offering meditation and transformational activism in a multi-lineage, secular Buddhist community.

“Buddhism is about a practice of meditation, so that an individual can develop more mental sanity and awareness of the world around her. And it’s about interdependence - which is saying that nothing on any level of our experience is happening in a vacuum.”

Ethan Nichtern is a Shastri (senior teacher) in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition, and the founder of The Interdependence Project. He's the author of two books, writes for many online publications, and teaches around the world. For more information, please visit Ethan Nichtern's website.

Transition Town is a grassroots network of communities that are working to build resilience in response to peak oil, climate destruction, and economic
instability. In this evening's program, we will watch a short film about Transition Town and Acharya Moore will lead a discussion.

Acharya Melissa Moore, PhD. has been a student of Shambhala since 1979. She has been teaching internationally since 1990, and was empowered as a Acharya in 2012. She co-founded, and continues to teach and develop, The Karuna Training, a 3-year professional certificate training in Contemplative Psychology and a division of Shambhala Europe.

February 20, Reciprocity Foundation
With Acharya Alan Schwartz

Since it's inception in 2004, the Reciprocity Foundation has helped homeless youth compose and record music, create films, create photography exhibits, design clothing, and model on Tyra Banks' hit show America's Next Top Model. But Reciprocity graduates are unique in their ability to manage stress (using meditation and yoga) and their strong desire to give back at every stage of their growth. 

Acharya Alan Schwartz became a student of Shambhala in 1970, when Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche first arrived and began to teach in North America. In 2010 he was appointed a Shastri, and appointed an Acharya in 2012. In 1989 Alan married Kerry Golemon Schwartz. They have raised two children, and continue to teach actively in the Bay Area under the guidance of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche.

Alan is particularly inspired by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche's vision for social transformation, and in particular the application of profound Shambhala Buddhist teachings in areas of worldly impact, such as working with the energy of business and wealth, and transforming materialism to activity which benefits society.

Addiction is a problem that touches nearly everyone. Whether you or a loved one is caught in a painful or even destructive pattern, or if you see the problem as a moral failing or a disease, addiction is a problem that can seem insurmountable. The practice of sitting meditation is a fundamentally healthy practice of body and mind that provides real transformation for any person with the bravery and gentleness to stay with it. Painfully ingrained patterns that seem so unworkable and overwhelming are not as solid as they seem. It doesn't happen all at once, but it does happen. Please join us for a discussion of this problem that touches so many of us.

Brad Cazden is a student on the profound path of meditation who will share his insight on how meditation can transform the roots of addiction into a path of well being and even liberation. Having spent the 90's as a musician in both SF and LA, and having spent the last 12 years on the path of meditation, he has firsthand knowledge of this problem and also of a completely transformative journey that is available to all.
