Miksang 1- Introduction to Contemplative Photography: Fresh Eyes - Fresh Perception
with Peter Welte
June 7 / 7:30 PM - June 9 / 4:00 PM
Miksang is a Tibetan word which means "Good Eye". Miksang photography has its roots in the Dharma Art teachings of the late meditation master, artist, and scholar Chögyam Trungpa.
Miksang practice affords the opportunity of synchronizing the eye and mind, learning to see things as they are and not as we think or imagine they are and to bring wakefulness and awareness to the viewing process. In a momentary flash of perception we begin to discern seeing from looking, and the world is experienced with fresh eyes. Through Miksang contemplative practice we have a vehicle for recording, expressing, and sharing our fresh visual experience of the phenomenal world.
What we will do: Miksang I is an introductory, experiential class open to first-time as well as more experienced photographers and includes instruction, assigned shoots, and review of participant images. We work directly with the elements or forms of the visual field: color, light, texture, lines and patterns. In this level we also attend to the "flash of perception" which discloses a direct presentation of the phenomenal world.
What to bring: A digital camera (point-and-shoot cameras are fine), fresh batteries (chargers), empty memory cards, flash drives for downloading images for review, and a laptop if you have one (to facilitate downloads and image selection for the review sessions). It is recommended and appreciated that participants are familiar with the basic operation of their camera. Two cameras are available for loan (call Peter to reserve one – 937-0431). Camera phones are not appropriate because of the technology needed.
On Saturday and Sunday, a light breakfast will be served at 8:30 am and lunch will be served in.
Class size will be limited to 12 participants.
Price: $115.00 Payment is requested at the time of registration to hold your place. Price includes lunch, both days.
