Shambhala Day Celebration -- Year of the Water Snake!

with Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche
February 11 / 7:30 AM - February 11 / 1:00 PM

Families and friends are encouraged to attend!

SHAMBHALA DAY marks the beginning of the New Year, and represents one of the most important traditions of Shambhala Buddhism. Based on the traditional Tibetan New Year's celebration of Losar, the day is calculated astrologically according to the Tibetan lunar calendar, and changes every year to coincide with the annual lunar cycles.

Shambhala Day is a time for us to express the wealth and richness of our spiritual and cultural heritage through feasting, conviviality, elegance and pomp. As is customary, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche addresses the worldwide Shambhala community on Shambhala Day through an onlinehook-up, which includes centres and groups from six continents and over thirty countries around the world.  San Antonio will also have the pleasure of having both Acharya Moh Hardin and Sangyum Cynde Grieve in attendance!

This is also the time when the Shambhala community is encouraged to make a financial donation to Shambhala in order to help support the activities of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche and our worldwide mandala.

Schedule of Shambhala Day Events

7:30 AM - Sunrise Ceremony, Lhasang, & Potluck Breakfast
The community gathers together to toast the sun as it rises upon a new year!  We are encouraged to bring our aspirations for the new year and share them with our friends.  This will be followed by the traditional Tibetan Lhasang smoke-blessing ceremony.  We will conclude the early morning with a yummy potluck breakfast -- please bring a dish to share!

9:00 AM - Elixir of Life Sadhana
The Elixir of Life is a short liturgy written by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche for use by Shambhala practitioners on their birthdays and the new year. Includes a series of simple yet pithy contemplations which are reminders of one's precious human birth and of the aspiration to help others.

10:30 AM - Membership gifts and Oath Ceremony
New members will receive their membership pins and take the membership oath.  New council members will take their oaths and the community will receive their Shambhala Day gift.

12:00 PM - The Sakyong's Online Video Address
Over 160 Shambhala Centers around the world gather together, online, to see the Sakyong's annual Shambhala Day address.
