THE ART OF LETTER WRITING : Voice, Calligraphy & Spirit
with Barbara Bash Christian McEwen
September 27 / 7:00 PM - September 29 / 6:00 PM
Here in the United States, many of us spend hours a day writing and responding to email. But finding time to write – by hand – a thoughtful, considered personal letter, has become increasingly rare. Over the course of this weekend, Barbara and Christian will explore the history of letter-writing, drawing on examples by practicing artists and writers, and setting it in the context of the “slow living” movement. Participants will be introduced to the basics of calligraphy (“beautiful writing”) and everyone will have the chance to write (and perhaps illustrate) several letters for themselves.
BARBARA BASH teaches drawing, brush calligraphy and communication practices
and is a Sky Lake meditation instructor. Her book True Nature : An Illustrated Journal
of Four Seasons is Solitude has just been re-published with new drawing exercises added.
CHRISTIAN McEWEN is a writer, education, and cultural activist.
She teaches poetry and creative writing. Her most recent book is
World Enough & Time : On Creativity and Slowing Down, published in 2011.
