Open House and Book Signing with Sergeant Paul Kendel

April 18 / 6:30 PM - April 18 / 8:30 PM

If you’re new to the Center this is an excellent time to come. Everyone is welcome!

Schedule:

  • 6:30 – 7:30 PM: Shamatha (calm abiding) meditation, often with a period of walking meditation in the middle.

  • 6:30 PM: Free meditation instruction is provided in a separate room.

  • 7:30 PM: Open House talk. This week, we are privileged and honored to host Sergeant Paul Kendel as our Open House speaker. Paul will be signing copies of his book, Walking the Tiger's Path: A Soldier's Spiritual Journey in Iraq, and copies of the book will be available for sale.

Paul Kendel is a former Georgia National Guardsman stationed in Iraq in 2005-6. Within a matter of weeks he became disillusioned with the American mission and with the aggression starting to overwhelm members of his unit. He found himself reading Sakyong Mipham's book, Turning the Mind into an Ally and resonating with his message of how to calm the mind and develop an attitude of openness and empathy toward one's self and the world. Paul returned from Iraq and has completed this memoir detailing his experiences applying meditation principles in a combat zone.

"Sergeant Kendel has shown great conviction while faced with the brutality of human aggression, constantly using compassion and a meditative mind. He was, therefore, on the front line of applying contemplative discipline. This book reveals that extraordinary journey." -- Sakyong Mipham

Sergeant Kendel's story has become part of the inspiration for The Ratna Peace Initiative to develop a pilot secular meditation program for combat veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder called the "Veterans Peace of Mind Project," veteranspeaceofmind.org.

Talks are free and open to the public. Further information is available on our Open House and Getting Started pages.

Prerequisites: None (and no previous experience with meditation is necessary).

Location: Seattle Shambhala Center, 3107 E Harrison St, Seattle.
