The Dharma of Communication: An Open Heart Retreat with Susan Piver
with Susan Piver
April 19 / 7:00 PM - April 21 / 12:00 PM
LOCATION NOTE: This program will be held at Cleveland State University
Whether written or spoken, our words really matter. We have so little time to “make our case” and often those we speak to (or write for) have even less time to listen. Even when there is plenty of time to consider our words, we may be faced with fear and self-doubt. We may clam up.
How can we say it instead? How can we speak so that others will truly hear us? How can our words create dialogue rather than just sequential monologues? How do we even know what to say and, as important, when to say it?
Most of all, how can we infuse our speech with clarity and kindness, no matter what words we choose, how much time we have, or whether our message is soft or hard?
Answers to these questions go way beyond always using “I” statements in a relationship or preparing carefully for a business meeting. They are about discovering our voice and using it fearlessly.
To do so, whether in a fight with our partner, asking the boss for a raise, being interviewed on television, or giving a speech to an audience of thousands, we have to let go of fixed mind. Of course this is the antithesis of what we usually choose to do when faced with the fear of speaking, which is to contract our mind, solidify our concepts, and hope against hope that no one will laugh at us.
Join Susan Piver for an exploration of speech that goes beyond fear. The weekend program will include:
- Meditation instruction and practice
- A discussion of Right Speech and an exploration of the energetics of speech
