Touching the Earth Activities

Food and Book Drive | Saturday, December 1 – Friday, December 21


During the lead-up to our Winter Solstice Celebration (Shambhala Children’s Day), two donation boxes will be available in the Shambhala Centre’s Community Room—one for non-perishable food items, the other for new or lightly used children’s books (for ages up to 16 years). On December 22nd, the collected items will be donated to The Mustard Seed, “a non-profit fighting hunger and restoring faith to hurting souls in Greater Victoria.”

Contemplative Walks and Miksang Photography Outings | Swan Lake | Saturday, December 8 and Sunday, January 6, 2:00 – 3:00 PM (1:30 PM start for Miksang participants)


On both days we will meet at the Swan Lake Nature House at 2:00 PM, rain or shine, for a 3 km walk around Swan Lake. The trail is well marked and flat. The boardwalks can be slippery when wet, so please wear shoes with non-slip soles. Those with Miksang photography training are welcome to meet at the Nature House at 1:30 PM to begin capturing images. Please dress warmly and be able to walk for at least 30 minutes without stopping to rest.

Winter Solstice Celebration | Shambhala Centre | Friday, December 21, 7:00 – 9:00 PM


Building on the Shambhala tradition of Children’s Day, this special evening is an opportunity to celebrate nature’s cycles, acknowledge what has passed, and make aspirations for the coming year. The celebration will also include a presentation on Solstice traditions, a group blessing, and a potluck feast of seasonal baked goods and savory finger foods.

Contemplative Walk | Shambhala Centre – Government House | Tuesday, December 25, 2:00 – 3:30 PM


Join us at the Shambhala Centre’s front doors, rain or shine, for a 3.5 km walk to Government House and back. The walk will combine silent wandering, using our senses to awaken us to the world, and an opportunity to become better acquainted with fellow participants. We will have a 15-minute meditation at Government House before heading back to the centre. Please dress warmly, bring a warm blanket, and be able to walk for at least 30 minutes without stopping to rest.

Contemplative Walk | Ogden Point – Finlayson Point | Thursday December 27, 1:00 – 2:30 PM


Join us at the front doors of the Ogden Point Cafe, rain or shine, for a 5 km walk along the sea cliffs to Finlayson Point and back. We will have about 15 minutes to sit reflectively in the shelter at Finlayson Point before heading back to Ogden Point. Please dress warmly and be able to walk for at least 30 minutes without stopping to rest. Feel free to linger in the Cafe afterward.
