Weekthün: The Four Immeasurables
A weekthün is a week-long group meditation practice that provides a precious opportunity to deepen your connection with the different stages and techniques of shamatha/vipashyana practice. The program's strong container is an excellent way to establish or re-establish an ongoing daily meditation practice that will permeate your life on and off the cushion.
The Four Immeasurables, or Four Limitless Ones, are: loving kindness (maitri), compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity. These form the ground for developing bodhicitta, or awakened heart. This is a practice in the Buddhist tradition of the vast and profound Great Vehicle, or Mahayana. The Immeasurables are expressed in the following aspiration verse which forms the basis for the practice:
- May all beings enjoy happiness and the root of happiness.
- May we be free from suffering and the root of suffering.
- May we never be separated from the great happiness devoid of suffering.
- May we dwell in the great equanimity, free from passion, aggression and prejudice.
Ordinarily our actions are egocentric and self-centered. The practices we will do are designed to bring about the types of feelings, emotions and thoughts which have a positive effect on our character. Studying and practicing the Four Immeasurables provides the opportunity to re-orientate ourselves and transcend this limited self-absorbed state. In this way we train to widen our circle of compassion to all living beings.
Breakfast, lunch, and a light supper are provided daily. Talks, discussion groups, Shambhala yoga, and interviews with the Director and Meditation Instructors are included in the program. Out-of-towners are welcome, and will be hosted in the homes of Phoenix Sangha members if requested.
Generosity policy applies. No one will be turned away because of lack of funds. Partial attendance is acceptable. Cost for partial attendance is 50.00 per day.
Please note: Space is limited, so please register as soon as possible in order to assure your spot in the program.
