Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It’s a relationship between equals... Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity.
-- Pema Chodron
Maitri Circle is a precious opportunity to speak your truth and be heard, and to listen wholeheartedly to others. “Maitri” is a Sanskrit word meaning unconditional loving-kindness. During the Circle, we cultivate this powerful, healing attitude using a simple form, based on “Council” from Native American Tradition.
The form: Each Circle begins with sitting meditation and a contemplation on loving-kindness. Then a 'talking stone' is placed in the center of the circle. Anyone who feels moved to share their present experience can pick up the stone and speak, while other group members practice listening in an open, unconditional way. When one participant has finished speaking, they return the stone to the center of the circle, and the group sits together until another person feels inspired to share their own experience. Participants are asked not to respond directly to what others say but to focus on listening unconditionally and sharing their own experience when they speak. The facilitator will adjust this form each month to suit the needs of the group.
Maitri Circle is facilitated by Lee Scher, a Shambhala teacher and meditation instructor. Maitri Circle is being offered in the hope of strengthening the environment of unconditional warmth and friendliness at our Center. It is open to both members and non-members. Non-members are encouraged to offer a $10-15 donation to support the Center. Please come add your presence and energy to our Circle!
