Being Brave - Shambhala Meditation Retreat

Bravery is the ability to create an atmosphere of possibility.
We need the courage and strength to take a fresh look at our lives in order to discover our richness and power. Meditation can be seen as an act of bravery: engaging with life, training a confident perspective, and giving ourselves time: to look before we see, to listen before we hear, to touch before we feel, and thus allowing the possibility of discovering the tremendous richness of the world, of others and, most importantly, of ourselves. In these challenging times, where aggression, speed, resistance and doubt are prevalent, it is easy to lose confidence in this richness and wisdom. Being brave is about finding the courage to just be, and discover the hidden treasure of humanity.
The famous Tibetan meditation master Sakyong Mipham said during last year’s retreat: "The notion of bravery in Shambhala means to always create an atmosphere of opportunity, always seeing what is possible. Thus in a phase of difficulties we actually become stronger.”
In this year’s Being Brave Retreat we focus on how we can create this atmosphere of possibilities in our personal life as well as look at society and investigate our view on it: How do we often limit our perspectives, what obstacles hinder us? How can we open up to situations, people, challenges – personal and societal? How can we foster our fresh views and make them emanate into our daily lives?
In this meditation retreat we are relating to our body and mind, opening up to others, and developing a fresh view of life and an inspiring vision of our society. We gather together to deepen our spiritual practice, to experience the magic of community, and the power of wisdom in everyday life.
Orhun Cercel, a senior teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition, and close student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, a highly regarded spiritual leader of our time, will be guiding meditation and contemplations. He will share his wisdom, and offer direct and practical teachings on bravery, gentleness and strength, and also on how these qualities bring about individual and societal transformation.
Through discussion groups, dialogues, and individual interviews with meditation instructors, we will share our experiences with one other. There will also be periods where we observe silence. In addition, we will find time to enjoy the tranquility of the natural environment of Dechen Chöling, and to celebrate life together.
The Shambhala tradition is both a vision and a method of knowledge, based on the view of Buddhism, and brings together various practices from oriental and occidental spiritual traditions. The view and practices within the Shambhala tradition teaches us that we need not be afraid of who we truly are. Through meditation we learn to bring body, mind and heart to the present moment, by which we can fully connect with our experience as it is. This retreat will touch into Buddhist notions like bodhicitta (the awakened mind), emptiness (the ideas of non-self and interdependency of all phenomena), and bodhisattva (an awakened being, who lives in the world through the motivation to be of benefit to others).
New and experienced meditators alike are warmly welcomed to this gathering at Dechen Chöling, where we will discover ways to transform our minds and thereby our world. Join us at this vibrant time of the year for a rewarding retreat filled with precious teachings.
