“Bodhichitta - Awakened Heart”

Learn to practice Bodhichitta, a simple technique for training the mind’s attention and presence, and bringing flexibility and poise to daily life situations.

We learn to bring body, mind and heart to the present moment, by which we can fully connect with our experience as it is. This retreat will focus on the Buddhist practices of Bodhichitta - awakened heart - building on a strong basis of mindfulness meditation. Through exploring the Bodhichitta practices of the Four Immeasurables: loving kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity, we are able to connect with the heartfelt feeling of compassion towards all beings. We will be more able to experience more equanimity, discover the simplicity of just being, and thus open up to oneself and others with compassion and gentleness.

The daily schedule will include sitting and walking meditation, talks, contemplations and exercises, silent periods and discussion. You'll find enough time for yourself, for reading, and for walks and strolls around the beautiful land of Dechen Chöling.

Who is this retreat for?                                                                                                                  This retreat is for anyone who wants to begin, or to deepen, their meditation practice, and explore how to open up to others with the loving-kindness and compassion of Bodhichitta. Anyone who wishes to connect more harmoniously with others: family, colleagues, neighbours, friends and community, and learn practical ways to cultivate an open and loving heart.

Can you tell us more about its main teachings?                                                                             Starting from a basis of mindfulness meditation, the retreat will focus on the practices of the Four Immeasurables, the qualities of loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity, our innate good qualities that we can all use and develop in our daily lives. We will also study the Lojong Slogans of Atisha, a great meditation master who used slogans as a guide on the path of meditation and daily life.

What will a typical day look like?
Each day will include guided meditation practice, contemplation and practice of the four qualities, and study of the Lojong slogans. Through talks, discussions and small group exchanges we will explore together our experience of working with the joys and challenges of our complex and changing world and relationships. There will be time for reading, walking, relaxing, and enjoying the support and friendship of others in an informal community atmosphere.

What makes Dechen Chöling a special place?                                                                                   In all seasons and all weathers, Dechen Choling provides a space in which to relax, renew our energy and confidence, and share our meditation journey in the company of others. Especially at midsummer, it is a magical place of light, trees, and water, in beautiful gentle rolling countryside.
