with Richard John
December 9 / 7:00 PM - December 9 / 7:45 PM
The Refuge Ceremony is scheduled for 7:00 pm, to be followed by a reception at 8:00 pm. Vow takers are welcome to invite friends and family to observe the vow.
There is a $20 material fee for the vow.
The REFUGE VOW marks the decision to commit oneself wholeheartedly to the Buddhist path and to further one's practice and training. It is the formal commitment to becoming a Buddhist, following the example of the Buddha Shakyamuni, his teachings (the Dharma) and joining the community (Sangha) of fellow practitioners.
Individuals wishing to take the Refuge Vow should meet with their Meditation Instructor about this decision and study the Refuge Vow Sourcebook (copies of which can be purchased online from Samadhi Cushions
or can be purchased at the Center bookstore.
Acharya John will give brief, required interviews to all Vow takers on Thursday and Friday, December 6-7, between 2:00 and 6:00 p.m. Please arrange this appointment with Eric Laufe (email below). We will try to accommodate out-of-towners with these.
There is also a chapter on the Refuge Vow in Chogyam Trungpa's Heart of the Buddha.
If you want to take the vow but do not have a Meditation Instructor, please contact me at the email below.
Please feel free to contact me if you have questions.
It is customary to make a cash gift to the preceptor who gives you the vow. The amount is entirely up to you. This is how they make their living.
