Lojong Screen Saver

This screen saver displays the mahayana slogans of "The Seven Points of Training the Mind," or lojong in Tibetan. It was created by Merlin Cox with the assistance of the Nalanda Translation Committee, whose translation was utilized.

The screen saver runs on Windows 95/98/ME machines. It is distributed as shareware: please send contributions to the Nalanda Translation Committee, 1619 Edward Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada B3H 3H9.

Questions and Answers

by Merlin Cox

What sort of system will the screen saver run on?

The screen saver was designed to run on a variety of Windows operating systems. It definitely will not run on a Mac. I have no particular reason to believe that it will not run on Windows 98 but have not had an opportunity to test it as yet. My limited opportunity to test it on Windows NT indicates there may be problems. As for PC hardware, I have run it on a 486 DX4-100 with 10 Mb of memory, which is considerably below the spec of most contemporary PCs.

What is shareware?

"Shareware" refers to software that is distributed free to try out but which you pay for if you wish to continue to use. In this case, if, having tried the screen saver out, you wish to continue to use it you are asked to consider making a donation
to support the continuing work of the Nalanda Translation Committee.

Installation Instructions

Attached is a self-extracting ZIP (compressed file, but still 973K!) for setting up the Slogan Utilities (screen saver).

Please let me know if you found the installation easy, if it worked as expected, etc. I am particularly keen to hear from Windows 98 and Windows NT users. I am also interested to know if you would prefer something "jazzier" (this is quite a simple design).

Contact details for the Nalanda Translation Committee are included with the software. The Nalanda Translation Committee have not fixed a specific sum to be donated.

Detailed Instructions

(Note: if you are installing over a previous version of the utilities you should de-install that version as described in the README file before you install this one.)

Download the executable file SLGNSZIP.EXE and run it.

In the dialog box that appears, hit the UNZIP button to extract temporary set-up files to your system's temporary directory (normally C:\TEMP or C:\WINDOWS\TEMP.) Once done, hit the dialog's CLOSE button.

Use Windows Explorer to navigate to that same temporary directory and run the SETUP.EXE executable file that you will find there. This will actually install the software. (Don't worry that the file date for SETUP.EXE is 1997.)

In the last dialog box of the installation process, tick the check-box labelled Yes, Launch the program file before you hit the "Finish" button.

After you have hit Finish, the standard Windows screen saver dialog will appear, where you can select Slogans as your system's screen saver, and can hit the Settings button to make adjustments to the appearance and timing of the
slogans.

You are advised to read the README file that is installed with the utilities. This should be accesible from your Windows start menu, under Start | Programs | Slogan Utilities | Read Me

Once the installation is complete you can delete the temporary set-up files (such as SETUP.EXE) in your TEMP directory at your leisure.

If you subsequently wish to de-install the utilities, consult the README file for instructions.
