Nyinthüns

Nyinthüns are the most important form of open group practice that is offered by local Shambhala Centers. They encourage group practice and inspire a sense of sangha. Traditionally, Nyinthüns last for a full day, from 9am to 9:30pm and include orioki practice at meals and functional silence. However, like many centers, the Juneau Shambhala Center has adopted two 3-hour meditation sessions (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) to encourage broader attendance.

The Nyinthun schedule for Juneau is from 10am to 1pm and from 2:30 to 5:30pm on the first Sunday of each month. (The practice is on the second Sunday of the month when there is a conflict with Shambhala Training Levels.) Sitting periods vary from 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the needs of participants, and alternate with 10 minute walking meditation. People are invited to come for all or any part of the sessions. Free meditation instruction is always available. In the afternoon there may be a teaching (reading, audio or videotape) and a discussion in the community room. The shrine room will be available all day for sitting meditation.
