Welcome to New Haven Shambhala Meditation Center

The New Haven Shambhala Center offers ongoing training in meditation, study, and contemplative arts to help us awaken our true nature and infuse our everyday activities with wisdom, compassion, and a sense of humor.

About Us

Established in 1975, we are part of Shambhala International, a community of meditation centers founded by the late Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, a Tibetan Buddhist meditation master, artist, author, and poet. Today, the Shambhala tradition is led by Trungpa Rinpoche's son, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche.

Shambhala represents a willingness to awaken into our world with fearlessness, and to appreciate the wealth and subtlety that surrounds us. This can be discovered through the study and practice of traditional Buddhism or other disciplines which cultivate our hearts as well as our awareness. At the Shambhala Center, we try to present a range of disciplines which share one core ethic: Wakeful intelligence. Our community includes people of all ages and walks of life who are exploring their world as individuals, together. We provide an open meditation space, instruction in meditation for beginners or experienced practitioners, and a diverse variety of evening and weekend programs that help provide the tools to discover compassion and wisdom in day-to-day life.

Upcoming Programs:

Five Wisdom Energies
taught by Irini Rockwell
NOVEMBER 21st - 23rd: This is a weekend about the five Buddha family energies. Discovering the particular way we perceive and interact with our world can yield enormous insight into our patterns of behavior, emotions and relationships. As we become familiar with our mix of energies, we learn to befriend them, having a sense of unconditional loving kindness towards ourselves.

Shambhala Training Level II: Birth of the Warrior
DECEMBER 5 - 7: This second weekend of Shambhala Training intensifies the discipline of meditation practice, enabling participants to work with obstacles that may have arisen as meditation practice develops. We also explore how habitual ways of thinking and experiencing obscure the raw brilliance of the world we live in and our own genuineness and tenderness. Finally, we learn how to work with the fear that occurs when we move forward out of these habitual patterns.

First Monday Open House
7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. on the first Monday evening of each month

A senior student from the New Haven Shambhala Center community will present a short talk on topics related to meditation and daily life from the Buddhist and Shambhala teachings.
